Several hundred attend events

April 6, 2011

Several hundred people attended Abbeyfeale Vocational School commemoration events which ran over the weekend. A book ‘Ceiliúradh nu mBlianta‘ documenting the 60 year history of the school was launched on Thursday night. Michael Moriarty of the Irish Vocational Education Association launched the eighty page publication to a packed room of students, staff and parents from the past and present. This had been preceded by the unveiling of a plaque at the front of the school by Cllr. Mary Jackman, Chairperson, County Limerick VEC. An exhibition of memorabilia, photographs and roll books from all the six decades saw huge numbers visit the school over three days. This exhibition also had on display some of the older practical equipment used in the classrooms of the 50s and 60s. A lot of the visitors used the opportunity to revisit their student life for the last time as the school will close this summer. There was also celebrations outside of the school grounds as the School held a special mass for members of its community both past and present in the local Church of the Assumption in Abbeyfeale on Friday. Copies of ‘Ceiliúradh na mBlianta’ are available to buy now from the school or from some local shops for 5 euro.

Abbeyfeale Football truimph in Kerry

November 18, 2008

Abbeyfeale Vocationals School under 18 footballers proved to be too strong for opposition from Kerry in the first round of Munster Vocational Senior ‘B’ Championships last Friday. The Abbeyfeale team took command after ten minutes and never relinquished thir lead, running out easy winners over a side from Causeway Comprehensive on a scoreline of 4-12 to 0-7. The game played in good conditions in Moyvane was Abbeyfeales first game of the season.

The fealesiders started well with three points from play within the first ten minutes coming from Michael Finnegan, Patrick Naughton and Adam Barry. At this point Causeway were matching Abbeyfeale and in fact the game was level on three occasions, but then superior combinations up front led to Abbeyfeale pulling into a decisive lead. Patrick Naughton, had two points before an excellent run by Thomas Smith led to a pass to Naughton who buried the ball into the bottom corner of the net. In an incredible individual first half performance Patrick Naugton added another 1-2 to this before the half time whistle and along with a point from Padraig Enright this left Abbeyfeale 2-8 to 0-3 ahead at the break.

The second half saw very little relenting of the Abbeyfeale onslaught. An initial bout of Causeway pressure ended with an excellent save by Conor Kiely in the Abbeyfeale goal. Michael Finnegan and Patrick Naughton pointed and when Adrian Enright goaled the game was all over. Thomas Smith quickly added a well taken goal to the Abbeyfeale total. While Adam Barry and Padraig Enright concluded a very successful day for Abbeyfeale with two points.

Team: Conor Kiely, Andrew Murphy, Thomas Gleeson, Stephen Cahill, John Brosnan, William O Connor, Joseph O Flaherty, Thomas Young, Jonathan O Connor, Thomas Smith (1-0), Patrick Naughton (2-6), Michael Finnegan(0-3), Adam Barry(0-2), Padraig Enright (0-1), Adrian Enright (1-0). Subs: Stephen Behan, James Broderick, Stephen McAuliffe, Padraig Lane, Michael O Sullivan, Chris Smith.

County champions

County champions

Abbeyfeale Vocational School won the Co. Limerick VEC U14 County Championship on Thursday last by the narrowest of margins when they defeated Hazelwood College of Dromcollogher. The match was played in ideal conditions in Dromcollogher.

Hazelwood College got to the better start and were 1-2 to no score after ten minutes. Matthew Broderick opened the scoring for Abbeyfeale with a well taken point This was followed by two points from team captain Adam Barry but Hazelwood struck back with another goal and a point leaving Abbeyfeale 2-3 to 0-3 in arrears.

The fact that several of the players had been involved in club games the previous evening was taking its toll. Hazelwood stretched their lead to seven points with another point. This triggered an Abbeyfeale fightback, a goal and a point from Shane Murphy, a goal from Matthew Broderick and another goal from Connor Kiely put Abbeyfeale in a one point lead at half-time, 3-4 to 2-6.

Abbeyfeale started strongly in the second half , two quick points from Adam Barry and another from Connor Kiely opened a three point gap. Hazelwood, however were not about to lie down and we had a nail-biting finish with Abbeyfeale winning out by just one point in the end.
